DirecTV And Disney Reach Agreement To Restore Channels, Expand Services

According to DirecTV’s official press release, DirecTV and The Walt Disney Company have reached an agreement in principle to restore Disney’s linear networks and enhance their direct-to-consumer offerings for DirecTV satellite, streaming and U-verse customers. This development comes as the companies finalize a new, multi-year contract, ensuring continued access to Disney’s full suite of entertainment, sports, and news programming.

Effective immediately, DirecTV customers can once again access all of Disney’s networks, including ABC Owned Television Stations, ESPN, Disney Channel, Freeform, FX Networks and National Geographic channels. The restoration comes just in time for key events like college football and the Emmy Awards, easing concerns for subscribers who had lost access during recent negotiations.

As mentioned in the press release, the agreement is not only a return to normalcy but also a leap forward in providing consumers with more choice and flexibility. Important aspects of the deal include the continued carriage of Disney’s linear networks on market-based terms, giving DirecTV customers access to various content. The agreement also introduces genre-specific bundles, allowing subscribers to choose from sports, entertainment, or family programming. These packages will include Disney’s direct-to-consumer services, such as Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ giving customers more control over their viewing preferences.

In addition to genre-based options, DirecTV customers will be able to access Disney’s streaming platforms through select subscription packages under a new wholesale model, according to the press release. The services will also be available for those who prefer to pick and choose specific content.

One of the standout features of the new deal is the inclusion of Disney’s upcoming ESPN flagship direct-to-consumer service, which will launch in 2025. DIRECTV customers will be able to access this new service at no additional cost, further enhancing the value of the agreement.

According to the press release, in a joint statement, DirecTV and Disney expressed their satisfaction with the deal, noting the significance of this collaboration in shaping the future of television. “Through this first-of-its-kind collaboration, DirecTV and Disney are giving customers the ability to tailor their video experience through more flexible options. DirecTV and Disney have a long-standing history of connecting consumers to the best entertainment, and this agreement furthers that commitment by recognizing both the tremendous value of Disney’s content and the evolving preferences of DirecTV’s customers. We want to thank all affected viewers for their patience and are pleased to restore Disney’s entire portfolio of networks in time for college football and the Emmy Awards this weekend.”

This agreement reflects the evolving landscape of media consumption, where viewers increasingly demand more personalized and flexible options.By expanding their partnership, DirecTV and Disney aim to meet their customers’ changing preferences while maintaining access to high-quality content.
