Comic Book has reported that even after being cancelled by Netflix, The Sandman, a show based on the popular DC comic series, has blown its closest competition on the streaming charts completely out of the water. The first part of the show’s final season became available on July 3rd, quickly becoming Netflix’s most viewed show. Its closest rival, The Waterfront, was lagging behind with 2 million fewer views.
Comic Book also mentions that the show being canceled was not do to the scandal surrounding its original author, Neil Gaiman (Good Omens, Stardust), even though its cancellation was announced during the time the scandal was going public, they claim that the show was never meant to be as long as the book, which tended to drag on with a slow pace. The showrunner, Allan Heinberg, was quoted as saying, “It was a decision we made three years ago.” He said they wanted to focus more closely on the main character of the series, who was often almost sidelined during certain volumes of the book.
Comic Book reveals that the second installment of the final season will be available to viewers on Netflix on July 24th. There will also be a final bonus episode that will debut later on July 31st, which will mark the end of the adaptation.
Comic Book also stated that Heinberg claimed he wanted the adaptation to focus on the larger plot of the Endless. He saw the series as a family drama. This is evident in the second season, where viewers find Dream and his siblings together during the most dramatic parts of the series. All of these events will make the capture of the Dream at the beginning of the series look like a walk in the park. Watch the DC comic adaptation The Sandman, currently streaming on Netflix.
