Deckhand Todd Meadows died last month during production on season 22 of the Discovery Channel series Deadliest Catch. At the time his death was first reported, few details were available. On Friday, Meadows’ fellow deckhand and bunkmate on the Aleutian Lady shared new information about the incident.
Trey John Green III told Page Six that the Bering Sea was “calm” in the late afternoon of Feb. 20, though the water remained “only a degree or two above freezing.” Crew members were taking turns climbing into the boats to sift through crabs they had just caught. Green said Meadows was inside a pot seated in the ship’s launcher when it suddenly fell “over the rail” and into the frigid water. “It’s one of those things that none of us really understand,” Green, 30, said. “I don’t know what happened.”
Meadows, who was 25, was “doing exactly what he was supposed to be doing,” Green added. The crew initially feared the pot would sink with Meadows trapped inside. Green said he then saw Meadows escape the pot and attempt to swim, though he was not wearing a life vest — none of the crew were.
Meadows was in the water for only “three or four minutes” before the boat’s designated swimmer retrieved him. By the time he was brought aboard, he was already “lifeless,” Green said. The crew attempted CPR and used a defibrillator, but their efforts were unsuccessful. According to the outlet, Meadows’ body was wrapped in a tarp and placed in the ship’s freezer as the crew returned to port.
“Everybody did everything they could do,” Green said, noting that the entire incident was captured by production cameras. “This remains an active U.S. Coast Guard investigation,” a Discovery Channel spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter. “We are assisting in their efforts and cannot comment at this time.”
The Coast Guard confirmed it is “conducting a marine casualty investigation following a death of a crewmember aboard the fishing vessel Aleutian Lady, near Dutch Harbor.” Capt. Christopher Culpepper of U.S. Coast Guard Sector Western Alaska and the U.S. Arctic expressed condolences, calling the incident “a tragic reminder of the dangers fishermen face daily.”
“We lost our brother, Todd Meadows,” Aleutian Lady captain Rick Shelford wrote in a Facebook post. “Todd was the newest member of our crew; he quickly became family. His love for fishing and his strong work ethic earned everyone’s respect right away.”
