According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has officially released the first look of Dead Boy Detectives in new teaser trailer. The show is based on the Vertigo comics by Neil Gaiman (Good Omens, Sandman) and Matt Wagner (Grendel). It was originally meant to premiere on Max but has now been moved to Netflix. According to The Hollywood Reporter, as a Netflix series, it will be part of the Sandman universe. It was originally developed as Max series as a part of the DC Universe because two characters from the comics, Edwin and Charles, made appearances in season three of Doom Patrol. However, after Warner Bros. Discovery made the executive decision to reset the DC Universe, Dead Boy Detectives was said to no longer fit in with the original plans.
The Hollywood Reporter also added that the description for the show reads:
“Do you have a pesky ghost haunting you? Has a demon stolen your core memories? You may want to ring the Dead Boy Detectives. Meet Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland, ‘the brains’ and ‘the brawn’ behind the Dead Boy Detectives agency. Teenagers born decades apart who find each other only in death, Edwin and Charles are best friends and ghosts … who solve mysteries. They will do anything to stick together — including escaping evil witches, Hell and Death herself. With the help of a clairvoyant named Crystal (Kassius Nelson) and her friend Niko (Yuyu Kitamura), they are able to crack some of the mortal realm’s most mystifying paranormal cases.”
The series stars George Rexstrew (Findhorn Case 31.08.18) and Jayden Revri (The Lodge, Fate: The Winx Saga) as our spiritual sleuths, via The Hollywood Reporter. Additional case members include Ruth Connell (Supernatural, For the Love of George), Brianna Cuoco (Harley Quinn, The Voice), Lukas Gage (Euphoria, The White Lotus), David Iacono (The Summer I Turned Pretty, Cinnamon), and Jenn Lyon (Claws, Crashing).
The series is being developed by Steve Yockey (The Flight Attendant), according to The Hollywood Reporter. He is also a co-showrunner with Beth Schwartz (Sweet Tooth). Executive producers include Greg Berlanti (Love, Simon), Sarah Schechter (You), and Jeremy Carver (Being Human).
