UPDATE: The series will still move forward at DC Studios with a new creative team the series has yet to cast a main actor for the role. According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO will not be moving forward with DC’s Booster Gold series. Writer of the series David Jenkins (Our Flag Means Death, People of Earth) posted on Friday that his adaptation of the DC comics hero is not moving forward with HBO. “My Booster Gold won’t be moving forward,” Jenkins wrote on Threads.
Jenkins added, “Can’t improve on Mahershala’s lovely statement so I’ll just apply it here as well.”
As per The Hollywood Reporter, Jenkins also reposted Mahershala Ali’s (Green Book, Leave the World Behind) viral comments calling out Marvel Studios for his Blade reboot not moving forward.
“For whatever reason, that project is not for me,” Ali had said via The Hollywood Reporter. “If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it. So I have to move on, and I have moved on. Again, you had me under contract, they have billions of dollars, if they wanted to do the movie, we would’ve done the movie. I feel ready to move on from the Blade questions. Those questions are for them. They didn’t want to do it, so they should answer that question.”
The Hollywood Reporter reports that the Booster Gold series was first announced to be in development in 2023. Jenkins was attached to write the pilot last year. Booster Gold’s character’s real name is Michael Jon “Booster” Carter in the comics. He was a football-playing college student from Gotham City who was expelled for gambling and went on to become a superhero, but cares more about his obsession with fame and wealth, which eventually leads him to join the Justice League.
Peter Safran (The Brave and the Bold, The Suicide Squad), DC Studios co-chief, previously said via The Hollywood Reporter that the series version would be“a loser from the future who uses his basic future technology to come back to today to pretend to be a superhero,” while co-chief James Gunn called the project a story about “a superhero’s imposter syndrome.”
HBO has yet to comment on Booster Gold.
