In a surprising announcement, Entertainment Weekly has reported that David Tennant will be returning for Jessica Jones Season 2. The Scottish actor provided a terrifying portrait of a Kilgrave as the villain of Jessica Jones Season 1, and his performance is one of the reasons the series is considered one of Netflix’s strongest Marvel shows.
It hasn’t been made clear to what extent Tennant’s Kilgrave will return for the series because Netflix has been keeping the plot details of Season 2 under wraps, but a few possibilities exist. Although Jessica Jones managed to defeat and seemingly murder Kilgrave back in Season 1, he might not be dead just yet.
At the end of Season 1, Kilgrave had his father perfect a chemical concoction that would strengthen his powers, and that season was all about how Kilgrave regenerated unexpectedly and surprised Jessica, who thought she had killed him. However, Season 1 also had Jessica suffer flashbacks and dream sequences with Kilgrave in them, so it’s also possible that Tennant will simply reappear for Season 2 in these capacities.
Jessica Jones first premiered on Netflix back in 2015 and was a hit amongst critics and fans for its impressive performances, quality writing, and progressive depictions of trauma and PTSD. Season 2 of the popular Marvel series started filming this spring. While few details have been released, some casting news has trickled out, with actors such as J.R. Ramirez (Power, Arrow) and Leah Gibson (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Rise of the Planet of the Apes) joining Season 2 along with Tennant.
Jessica Jones Season 2 is expected to air on Netflix sometime in 2018. To tie you over until then, Jessica Jones will continue to fight crime in The Defenders, which premieres August 18 on Netflix.
