Netflix has confirmed the arrival of Love, Death & Robots, an adult-centered animation series produced by David Fincher and Tim Miller. David Fincher is known for such works as House of Cards and Mindhunter, both on Netflix, and famous for such heavy films like Seven, Fight Club, Gone Girl, The Social Network. Tim Miller, on the other hand, is known for films like Deadpool and other animated works that are more family-friendly, such as the award-winning animated short Gopher Broke. This duo creates an interesting combination for a possible zanny yet introspective work that might be more suited for a larger audience.
The series is set to be released as 18 shorts ranging from all genres, fantasy to sci-fi and horror to comedy, and although animated, will be intended for adult audiences. “Love, Death & Robots is my dream project,” Miller admitted. “It combines my love of animation and amazing stories. Midnight movies, comics, books and magazines of fantastic fiction have inspired me for decades, but they were relegated to the fringe culture of geeks and nerds of which I was a part. I’m so f–ing excited that the creative landscape has finally changed enough for adult-themed animation to become part of a larger cultural conversation.” While each episode will range from only 5-15 minutes, they will also each feature different graphic styles, from 2D to photo-realistic 3D CGI graphics.
Additionally, Netflix confirmed that the characters of this series will range from “sentient dairy products, werewolf soldiers, robots gone wild, garbage monsters, cyborg bounty hunters, alien spiders, and blood-thirsty demons from hell in an orgy of *NSFM (not suitable for mainstream) shorts,” adding that “each film is painstakingly crafted, charged with a mix of energy, action, and unapologetic dark humor.” This is just one of many animated works that Netflix is set to roll out in their push for growth in its animation field. Along with their more family friendly works, like the upcoming adaptation of Carmen Sandiego, Netflix already has some adult-themed animations like Bojack Horseman and Big Mouth.
Miller and Fincher have previously worked together on the film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Miller is set to produce a reboot of Terminator, slated for November. There is no current release date for Love, Death & Robots.
