While Dave Annable’s (Yellowstone, Armed Response) character Lee Dutton died at the end of the pilot episode of Paramount+’s drama Yellowstone, it looks like his character in Special Ops: Lioness, may last a bit longer. In Lioness, Annable plays Neil, the husband of the leading woman Joe, played by Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Colombiana). Annable sat down with Deadline to discuss his characters on both Taylor Sheridan shows.
One of the elements Annable discussed how Sheridan made up for his character’s early death. “When it came back Taylor asked me if I was still interested,” he said. “And I was like, oh my gosh, this is amazing. There might have been some version of an IOU in there, you know, his feeling bad. But I think I’m the right guy for the part. And you know, Taylor has really proven over and over again that he knows what he’s doing when he puts the crew and cast together. I’m over the moon. I’m so grateful.”
Annable also discussed Neil’s relationship with Zoe. “My wife is traveling around and I’m home with the kids, but at the same time, I’m this sort of brilliant surgical oncologist who’s saving people,” she said. ”We know their schedules are insane. So we navigate that whole world of marriage and work, which leads to this interesting relationship of sacrifice of love. Throughout the series we are gonna see Neil struggle more with all of his responsibilities. This marriage to Zoe’s character is really interesting because she really can’t talk about her work and what she’s going through. In response, I think Neil has a hard time opening up about his work and it really is this lack of communication that becomes troubling.”
Further, He touched on how much Neil knows about what Zoe’s job really is. “I would assume he knows that because from the story they’ve been together a long time and have nothing but love for each other. Like we really are soulmates, but there’s this interesting juxtaposition of passion, career, and nationalism. So I think he’s gotta know that she’s in some stuff that she’s not allowed to talk about. But you know, that also brings this other layer of like, oh my gosh, my wife is potentially in danger every day and I have these two girls that I’m taking care of. And what is that like? Is she gonna come home from this one? There’s a moment in the series where he notices she’s been kind of beaten up and she’s not able to talk about it.”
