The dynamically talented actor behind the second and best rendition of the infamous Marvel villain Wilson Fisk, Vincent D’onofrio, has officially cast his support for a fan-made petition to save Netflix’s Daredevil, which currently has almost 50,000 signatures. Sharing it on Twitter yesterday afternoon, D’onofrio was apart of the mass-confusion that occurred in late-November of last year, a surprising turn of events in which Netflix inevitably decided to drop the ax upon an impending fourth season for one the MCU‘s most daring and beloved television projects to date.
The cancellation took almost everyone back a step or two, arriving just a few weeks after show-runner Erik Oleson pitched his plans for season four and after plans were already in motion to begin production for season 4 in February of this year. Arriving a mere month after the dual cancellations of Iron Fist and Luke Cage, it would seem that Netflix is dead-set on ending the reign of the grimmer and bleaker world of the MCU, at least for now. Some rumors have painted the trigger-man out to be none other than Marvel Studios themselves, in that they were simply removing those series from one streaming platform to the upcoming and impending Disney+ streaming service which is reported to house stand-alone TV series for both Star Wars and the MCU.
That said, fans have not taken the news well, including me. The cast and crew behind the acclaimed series have been understandably radio-silent, but after a petition was started by Joseph Garcia who is imploring both Marvel and Netflix to do one of the two things: Either negotiate a new deal to renew Daredevil on Netflix or another outlet, or reach an agreement to allow the Marvel characters previously streamed on Netflix to appear in other platforms. After this idea and this plea for renewal began to catch fire, D’Onofrio was one of the few Daredevil alums to break-the-ice by publicly supporting this call to action.
Realizing that a petition, no matter the number of signatures, is not going to bring back the show, D’Onofrio is surely admitting his support to primarily connect with the fans once more. That said, the future for these shows and the looming potential of a dark-channel or a black-label category appearing on the family-friendly Disney+ platform seems a bit foggy thus far. For now, Marvel fans will have to pay close attention to what might be the final seasons of both Jessica Jones and The Punisher. Hopefully Marvel TV can go out on a bang, and Marvel guru Kevin Feige is a fan-enthusiast who knows how to give us the things that we want and seems to always know the best time to give them to us, so who knows, maybe we’ll see the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen rear his head on the silver screen in a few months. Who knows, at this point, anything could happen.
