Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) and Riley Keough (The Devil All the Time) are set to star in an upcoming limited series. Entitled Cult Following, the limited series will tell the story of the notorious Children of God cult according to Entertainment Weekly.
The limited series takes its name from an upcoming memoir written by Bexy Cameron, a former member of the Children of God cult. Cameron’s novel is anticipated to be released July 8, 2021. In it, she recounts the years of trauma she suffered growing up within the cult and her eventual path to freedom.
No network or premiere date has been announced as of yet for Cult Following. It is a Project One Media production. In addition to starring in it, Johnson and Ro Donnel will executive produce through their production company TeaTime Pictures along with Keough and Gina Gammell (Dixieland) through their production company Felix Cupa. Cameron has also signed on to executive produce.
On the news of her memoir being adapted into a TV series, Entertainment Weekly picked up a statement Cameron released: “It’s a dream come true, to be working with Dakota, Riley, Ro, Gina, and Platform One. It’s overwhelming to think that such a stellar group of phenomenal women in the industry will be bringing my story to life.”
Johnson and Donnel released a joint statement on the upcoming project picked up by Deadline. They said: “It has been a dream of ours since we launched TeaTime to collaborate with Riley and Gina at Felix Culpa. We are beyond thrilled to join forces and friendship to bring Bexy’s remarkable story to the screen. Alongside Platform One, we look forward to adding the final top notch collaborators to the team.”
The series will see Johnson as Cameron, portraying her as an adult traveling across America investigating cults and reporting on the dangers of joining one. Keough will play her best friend who comes along for the ride, helping Cameron document the cults. It will also detail Cameron reckoning with her past and attempting to move past the trauma of residing within a cult for so many years.
Fiction reflects reality as Johnson and Keough have been best friends in real life since they were fifteen years old. Though both are mainly film actors, they have had previous starring roles in television. Johnson starred in the short lived sitcom Ben and Kate from 2012-2013. Keough previously starred in the Starz network drama The Girlfriend Experience in 2012.
