According to the Hollywood Reporter, The Daily Show’s comedian and alum, Roy Wood Jr. (Sullivan & Son), will bring his sense of humor as the host of CNN’s adaptation of Have I Got News for You, which will debut its 14th season on September 14th. It was announced in May that Hat Trick Productions, which has created titles like The Secret, would help in producing the adaptation. The section started back in 1990 and was originally part of the BBC, which focused on two panelists focusing on and answering sports questions with a blend of humor.
“For far too long immigrants have been coming to America and taking Black jobs, kudos to CNN and the immigrants at Hat Trick Productions for bringing a Black job to the States,” Wood said in a statement in an interview via Hollywood Reporter. He continued, “It is an honor to be a part of such a hallowed British institution to help make sense of the American institutions of chaos, name calling, disinformation, reality television and the 8-hour news cycle.” Have I Got News For You will also feature team captains, which will be announced as soon as the premiere date is revealed.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, this is just another addition to Wood Jr.’s long list of roles, as he was the correspondent for The Daily Show from 2015–23, hosting numerous shows after Trevor Noah’s (Into the Uncut Grass). His career also includes small cameos in renowned TV series such as Only Murders in the Building and Better Call Saul.
The show promises to deliver sharp observations, witty banter and a healthy dose of irreverence as Wood Jr. and his panel of guests tackle the week’s most newsworthy events. The adaptation will surely be similar to the original and filled with a mix of comedians, entertainers and political figures.
