D23 Expo: ‘Willow’ Series Premieres New Trailer; Announces Christian Slater Joining The Cast

The return to the fantastical world of Willow is imminent as Disney released a brand new trailer for the series at yesterday’s D23 Expo in Anaheim. The series starring Warwick Davis as Willow Ufgood is set for a November 30th release. View the new trailer below.

Based on the 1980s film of the same name, Willow centers on the themes of friendship and unexpected heroes as Davis’ Willow organizes a troupe of ordinary folks to combat a new evil set to vanquish the world as they know it. The series cast includes Tony Revolori (Spider-Man: No Way Home, DOPE), Ellie Bamber (Nocturnal Animals, The Serpent), Dempsey Byrk (Coroner, Far Cry 6), Eryn Keyllyman (Falcon and the Winter Soldier, The Last Jedi), Amar Chadha Patel (The Third Day, Doom: Annihilation) and Ruby Cruz (Castle Rock, Mare of Easttown). Davis is also joined by Joanne Whalley (Scandal, Kill Me Again) returning as Sorsha, according to Variety.

At the event, Davis introduced the main cast along with a new addition. Dr. Death‘s Christian Slater has joined the series in a role only described as a “friend” to the film’s character Madmartigan, played by Val Kilmer (Batman Forever, Tom Gun: Maverick) via Variety. An 80s film icon in his own right, Slater’s credits include Mr. Robot, Heathers, True Romance, Netflix’s Inside Job, and The Public.

“This was a very fun character,” Slater told the frenzied expo crowd via Variety, “we got to have some improv, ad-libs we came up with stuff on the spot which was fun,” Slater said.

The series will see the original film’s director, Ron Howard, return as an executive producer. He is joined by Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy (Indiana Jones 5, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), Michelle Rejwan (Monster Challenge), and co-showrunners Wendy Mericle (Arrow, Desperate Housewives) and Jonathan Kasdan (In the Land of Women, Star Wars: A Solo Story) as executive producers. Film writer Jon Dolman will serve as a consulting producer, according to Variety. Jon Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights) was previously attached as director and executive producer but had to withdraw from the project due to schedule conflicts.
