Though the popular CW series Arrow will premiere its last season in October, it may not be the last fans see of the world of Star City. The network has announced that it is developing a new spinoff series that will focus on the female characters of the Arrow-verse.
The CW’s DC television universe has been a defining element of the CW brand for many years. The Flash, originally airing in 2014, remains the network’s most watched original series. CW president Mark Pedowitz recently revealed that though the older DC series on the network like Arrow would be wrapping up production after its eighth season, the CW would not necessarily be stepping away from the DC universe. Rather, the company is planning to introduce the “next generation” of DC shows with properties such as Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, and Supergirl. The network has also been developing new female-led series, including Batwoman and the new Arrow spinoff.
The new spinoff will air as a backdoor pilot within the final season of Arrow in October. If picked up, the series will follow three of the female characters from Arrow: Mia Smoke, played by Katherine McNamara, Laurel Lance, played by Katie Cassidy, and Dinah Drake, played by Juliana Harkavy. The series will be co-written by Beth Schwartz, Marc Guggenheim, Jill Blankenship and Oscar Balderrama, and will be produced alongside Berlanti Productions.
This spinoff episode serves as the CW’s first pilot order of the broadcast season. In the past year, the CW has parted with many of its popular series, including Supernatural, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Jane the Virgin, and now Arrow. The network has been trying to fill in the gaps with new original series, but attempts like Pandora and Batwoman have been largely unsuccessful so far.
The final season of Arrow premieres on October 15th. You can watch the trailer for the new season below.
