‘Critics’ Choice Real TV Awards’ Nominations Announced: Netflix Takes The Lead

The second annual Critics’ Choice Real TV Awards 2020 nominations were announced, following their new timeline of events amidst the coronavirus pandemic and industry-wide shutdown, via Hollywood ReporterThe Critics Choice Association (CCA) represents over 400 critics either from TV, radio, or online publications, making it the largest critics organization in the U.S. and Canada. The ultimate goal of the awards show is to acknowledge “excellence in nonfiction, unscripted, and reality programming across broadcast, cable, and streaming platforms,” via Hollywood Reporter.

Nominees were grouped into varying categories including ‘competition series,’ ‘unstructured series,’ business show,’ ‘limited documentary series,’ ‘live show,’ etc. In a statement, CCA TV Branch president Ed Martin concluded, “Our nominees for the 2020 Critics Choice Real TV Awards reflect the broad range of dynamic unscripted content available on all television platforms. We are once again honored to bring muchdeserved attention to the best of reality TV, a genre that continues to entertain and educate us all,” via People

While the winners will be announced in the coming weeks via a press release, Survivor host Jeff Probst (The Jeff Probst Show) will be receiving the Critics Choice Real TV impact Award for “his ongoing contributions to the unscripted television industry,” via Hollywood ReporterIn addition, the categories of Female Star of the Year and Male Star of the Year will be the only groups open to the public for voting at criticschoice.com.

Netflix’s Cheer and VH1’s Rupaul’s Drag Race both earned 5 nominations and take the lead in total nominations. Moreover, Netflix is leading nominations for the second consecutive year with 31 total nominations. ABC, Fox, and NBC follow far behind. The winners will be announced on June 29.
