This morning, the nominations for the Critics’ Choice Awards were announced and the usual suspects led in terms of nominations. Entertainment Weekly reported that FX’s wildly popular miniseries The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story had the most nominations of any show, with six nominations. HBO’s Game of Thrones had five nominations and Netflix’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt also had five nominations.
In terms of who leads by the networks, HBO has 22 nominations, ABC and Netflix both have 14 nominations and FX scored 12 nominations.
A lot of the nominations look similar to the Primetime Emmy awards, which were announced in July before the awards were telecast in September. Sarah Paulson, Cuba Gooding Jr., Courtney B. Vance, John Travolta and Sterling K. Brown were all nominated for their roles on The People vs. O.J. Simpson and Vance, Brown and Paulson won for the same roles at the Emmys. The show is also nominated for Best Movie Made for Television or Limited Series, which is another Emmy the show received.
For Game of Thrones, the story is the same as The People vs. O.J. Simpson, where a lot of the cast who was nominated for Emmys are also nominated for the Critics’ Choice Awards, including Peter Dinklage and Kit Harrington. The show is also up for Best Drama Series, where it faces stiff competition from Stranger Things, Mr. Robot and This Is Us, among other well-received dramas that are also nominated in the category.
Also similar to the Emmys is Constance Zimmer’s nomination for UnREAL, whereas her co-star Shiri Appleby isn’t nominated despite a strong performance.
This year’s Critics’ Choice Awards is the last time some familiar show in the television industry will be making an appearance. Both Christine Baranski and Michael J. Fox have been nominated for their roles in The Good Wife, which ended its seven season run on CBS back in May. Baranski has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series and Fox is nominated for Best Guest Performer in a Drama Series.
Some of the surprises on the nominations include NBC’s This Is Us, which just premiered in September to rave reviews and stellar ratings, Netflix’s The Crown, which has been out for less than a month and FX’s Atlanta, which, like This Is Us, has been out since September and just wrapped up its first season run. And Outlander, despite getting little love from the Emmys, scored two nominations for the show’s lead actors.
But even with surprise nominations comes nominations that everyone was expecting, including HBO’s Veep, with the show being nominated for Best Comedy series and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tony Hale and Anna Chlumsky being nominated for their acting.
Check out the full list of nominations below. The Critics’ Choice Awards will air live on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 8 p.m. on A&E.
