Popular streaming show Critical Role has unveiled the official trailer for upcoming series Candela Obscura. The trailer, available below, also reveals the premiere date of the first episode to be May 25th.
The show will follow the TTRPG (tabletop role playing game) format, which was popularized after the release of the 1974 game Dungeons & Dragons. According to Critical Role’s official website, “Candela Obscura is an ongoing monthly horror drama that follows an esoteric order of investigators as they use centuries of knowledge to fight back against a mysterious source of corruption and bleed. Leveraging gaming as a story mechanic, the series features the Candela Obscura tabletop roleplaying game from Darrington Press, which is built on the Illuminated Worlds system.”
Additionally, “at the beginning of each episode, an inciting incident occurs, prompting a team, or circle, of investigators to uncover and solve the mystery at hand.” This makes it easy for viewers to watch any episode they want, regardless of the order.
The trailer reveals the cast, led by Matthew Mercer (Thundercats, Resident Evil: Damnation) as the Game Master, which includes Robbie Daymond (Hi-Fi Rush, Spider-Man) as Howard Margrove, Laura Bailey (The Legend of Vox Machina, Call of Duty: Vanguard) as Argo Black, Anjali Bhimani (Ms. Marvel, Exandria Unlimited) as Charlotte Eaves, and Ashley Johnson (The Last of Us, Blindspot) as Auggie James.
Taliesin Jaffe (Mr. Mom, Hellsing) and Chris Lockey (Red Faction: Armageddon – The Machinima Miniseries, Chicks 101) serve as the creators for Candela Obscura. Spenser Starke (100 Thieves: Crash the Compound: National Treasure Scavenger Hunt, SourceFed) and newcomer Rowan Hall will be working as lead designers and writers. Steve Failows (Graveyard Shift, Postal) will direct and co-produce the series alongside Maxwell James (Savant: Kali 47, Thresher).
Candela Obscura will air on May 25 at 7 p.m. Pacific time on both Youtube and Twitch. Following episodes will be released on the final Thursday of every month. There will also be a podcast version available two weeks after each episode broadcast.
