Creator of ‘Succession’ Reveals Whether Kendall Roy’s Name Was Crossed Out or Underlined

According to Deadline, Succession creator Jesse Armstrong (In the Loop, Fresh Meat) has finally revealed if Kendall Roy’s name was crossed out or underlined in the fourth season of the series. Until now, this has been debated amongst fans of the show.

In episode four of the fourth and final season of Succession, Frank, played by Peter Friedman (The Marvelous Ms. Maisel, The Seventh Sign), finds a note that suggests Kendall, played by Jeremy Strong (The Gentlemen, The Big Short), would be the successor of Brian Cox’s (Troy, Braveheart) Logan Roy. However, there was a line that appeared to either be crossing out or underlining Kendall’s name, which made fans question whether or not Logan actually wanted Kendall to be his successor.

At an event hosted by the Financial Times in London, Armstrong was asked a question about what the note meant.

“If you were gonna cross out, you wouldn’t start underneath, would you?” Armstrong said in a video posted on X, formerly known as Twitter by journalist Cassam Looch, according to Deadline. The video can be seen below.

Armstrong stated that he did not answer questions like that while Succession was airing, but because the series has finished he was “happy to spoil it by telling you what I think of everything,” reports Deadline.

“Occasionally, I would remind him to do a take where it was like, do remember, this was earlier on in the show, it could be you as well,” Armstrong said, according to Deadline. “Just to make sure he had that thing about [how he’s] a suck-up who also had some steel that could be activated at a certain point.”
