A highly anticipated HBO comedy has welcomed another member to its cast. Deadline reports Connie Britton (Promising Young Woman, Friday Night Lights) has joined the untitled HBO comedy starring Steve Carell and created by Bill Lawrence (Ted Lasso, Shrinking) and Matt Tarses (Scrubs, Sports Night).
Birtton is the latest high-profile name to join an illustrious list of performers set to appear in the project. Previously announced actors include Phil Dunster (Murder on the Orient Express, Pragma) in an unknown role, Charly Clive (Pure, The Lazarus Project) set to portray Carell’s co-lead, Danielle Deadwyler (The Piano Lesson, 40 Acres) cast as the head of the college’s English Department, John C. McGinley (Ted Lasso, Married with Children) as the university’s president, and Lauren Tsai (Legion, Moxie).
As mxdwn previously reported, the series is set to occur on a college campus as Carell, an author, seeks to mend his strained relationship with his daughter. Britton will play Carell’s ex-wife.
According to Deadline, the first 10 episodes were penned by Lawrence and Tarses, who also serve as executive producers. The two join several other EPs, including Doozer Productions’ Liza Katzer (Whiskery Cavalier, Head of the Class) and Jeff Ingold (Clone High, Bad Monkey), Barbie Adler (Arrested Development, My Name Is Earl), Annie Mebane (The Chicken Sisters, Atypical), Jonathan Krisel (Baskets, Moonbase 8), Anthony King (Search Party, Woke), David Stassen (Running Point, Central Intelligence) and Carell. Warner Bros. Television also produces.
Deadline lists that Britton recently appeared in the breakout Prime Video comedy, Overcompensating, and Netflix’s political limited series, Zero Day. She’s best known for portraying Tami Taylor in NBC’s critically acclaimed adaptation of Friday Night Lights, which has been positioned for a possible reboot.
Legendary scribe Lawrence is keeping busy with several series in the works. Along with the third season of Apple TV+’s Shrinking in production, he earned the green light for a Scrubs reboot starring everyone’s favorite nurse, J.D. Dorian, played by Zach Braff (Garden State, Cheaper by the Dozen).
