Saturday night, Comic-Con’s famous Hall H quickly filled with fans and press anticipating Marvel Studios’ return to the annual convention. The stakes were high as Kevin Fiege and his team looked to rebuild from the early pitfalls of the Multiverse saga. Many expected details on the upcoming WandaVision spinoff Agatha All Along, and news surrounding the breakout hit, X-Men ’97. However, no TV series or mutants were discussed during the hour-long panel.
Kathryn Hahn’s return to Disney+ as the wicked Agatha Harkness is set for a September 18 premiere. Picking up where she was left brooding in TV sitcom hell, the witch prepares to gather a coven and reclaim her power. The series stars Patti LuPone (American Horror Story), Aubrey Plaza (Legion), Sasheer Zamata (Saturday Night Live), and Joe Locke (Heartstopper).
The Emmy-nominated X-Men ’97 became the essential introduction of mutants back into the Marvel fold. After retrieving the characters from Fox, the Hosue of Mouse wasted no time in announcing the animated series, an exact continuation of the 1990s animated show. With season two in the works and already renewed for third season, any news on the X-Men — animated or otherwise — would have been great to see from the panel stage. Unfortunately, we must wait for Disney’s D23 presentation to see what Marvel Television has prepared, which is rumored to include first looks at the animated series Eyes of Wakanda and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and the long-awaited return of Matt Murdock in Daredevil: Bron Again.
In place of the TV news, fans did receive a first look at Marvel Studios’ upcoming films and other revelations. Anthony Mackie (Falcon and The Winter Soldier) and the cast of Captain America: Brave New World appeared with new clip. And the cast of The Thunderbolts* surprised with David Harbour (Stranger Things) in full Red Guardian attire. We also received the official title for the movie centering Marvel’s first family: Fantastic Four: The First Steps. And The Russo Brothers (Captain America: Civil War) ended the presentation on a high note, confirming they will be directing Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
