Chuck Pratt Named New Showrunner of Lee Daniels’ Music Drama ‘Star’

Chuck Pratt has replaced Charles Murray as showrunner on Lee Daniels’ new Fox music drama Star. THR reported that Pratt (Desperate Housewives, The Young and the Restless) has joined the series as executive producer.

Murray departed Star because of creative differences with Daniels and series co-creator Tom Donaghy when it came to his vision for the show.

Pratt has previously served as head writer and executive producer on General Hospital, All My Children, and The Young and the Restless. He has also worked on Desperate Housewives, Ugly Betty, and The Lying Game.

Star, with its pilot co-written by Daniels and Donaghy, is set in Atlanta and centers around three girls (Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny, and Brittany O’Grady) in a band. Unlike Empire, Daniels’ other music show, Star tells the story from the artist’s, rather than music executive’s, point of view. The show chronicles the band’s success in a difficult music business.

The series, headlined by Benjamin Bratt and Queen Latifah, is slated to launch when Empire goes on holiday hiatus.

Star is the most recent show of the upcoming television season to have its showrunner change. Other shows such as NBC’s Powerless and Fox’s live-action/animated hybrid comedy Son of Zorn.
