According to Deadline, while discussing the new Big Bang Theory spin-off, Chuck Lorre (Young Sheldon, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage) explained the choice behind the franchise’s latest series, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. Lorre explained that Stuart was “the absolute worst choice” for the offshoot, as he was minor character that fans did not expect to get a spinoff nearly 20 years later. The series premiered on Thursday at 9 pm ET on HBO Max.
“He was the absolute worst choice to be the hero of this story, which made him the perfect choice,” Lorre told People via Deadline. “And Kevin Sussman (Made of Honor, Lessons in Chemistry), as I’m sure you know, is just a brilliant comic actor, someone you can root for despite his inadequacies. You can look for him.”
Lorre noted via Deadline that “it was always Kevin” he had in mind for the series, adding, “And right from the very beginning it was Kevin, and the comic book story was.”
Sussman previously admitted to Deadline that leading his own spin-off “was not on my bingo card” as a working actor. “I was not expecting this,” he said.
Big Bang Theory follows a group of brilliant but socially awkward individuals whose meticulous lives are disrupted when cheerful waitress and aspiring actress Penny moves into the apartment across the hall.
As per Deadline, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is a spinoff of Big Bang Theory following the character of staurt from the original series as he must face a “multiverse armageddon” after accidentally damaging a device created by Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter.
According to Deadline, the spinoff comes from co-creators Lorre, Zak Penn (Free Guy, Incident at Loch Ness) and Bill Prady (The Muppets, Here Come the Munsters), sees Stuart reunite with his pals Bert played by Brian Posehn (Run Ronnie Run, The Devil’s Rejects), Denise, played by Lauren Lapkus (The Wrong Missym The Curse of Bridge Hollow) and Kripke played by John Ross Bowie (Curb Your Enthusiam).
