Stephen Colbert (The Colbert Report) will produce television series adaptation of Roger Zelazny’s (The Guns of Avalon) The Chronicles of Amber, according to Variety. Colbert will take on the role of executive producer for the series under Spartina productions, and is also joined by Skybound Entertainment, and Vincent Newman Entertainment. Skybound originally announced that they wanted to develop the fantasy novel series back in 2016.
According to Variety, George R.R. Martin (House of the Dragon), author of Game of Thrones, has even stated that The Chronicles of Amber novel series was a great inspiration for his novel, and he wants to see the series brought to the screen. Colbert stated, “George R.R. Martin and I have similar dreams. I’ve carried the story of Corwin in my head for over 40 years, and I’m thrilled to partner with Skybound and Vincent Newman to bring these worlds to life. All roads lead to Amber, and I’m happy to be walking them.”
The CEO of Skybound Entertainment, David Albert shared, “Adapting one of my favorite book series of all time is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. Producing it alongside someone like Stephen Colbert, who is a true-blue super fan, is a thrill for me, and will be for anyone who’s ever listened to Stephen talks about fantasy. We can’t wait to share this amazing story both with the legion of current fans like ourselves and a new generation of fans that will undoubtedly fall for Amber.”
The Chronicles of Amber is a series of fantasy novels written by Zelazny, and consists of two main story arcs which take place in two contracting worlds, Amber, and Chaos. It follows the story of Corwin who awakens on Earth, a shadow parallel to the true worlds with no memories.
According to Variety, the adaptation has yet to secure writer as well as there is no network or streaming service attached to the project. Currently, Colbert and Spartina are under a first-look deal with CBS Studios but they are not the studio behind the series as of yet.
