Chris Martin Joins ‘The Voice’ As Mentor

Coldplay‘s vocalist will be helping out in the current season of the NBC hit show, which has shifted into a new format to welcome him, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Shakira and Chris Martin

Chris Martin will make a special appeareance in the episode that will air on March 31 and he’ll be a “universal mentor,” which means he will be helping out all of The Voice‘s “official mentors,” who are Shakira, Adam Levine, Usher and Blake Shelton.

In this new round that NBC decided to create for this season, the contestants will be paired-up with someone new and will have to perform “sudden-death battles.”

These battles will substitute the previously used “knockout stages,” which had the contestants performing songs of their choice to let the mentors evaluate their capacity of choosing the right song to fit their singing abilities.

Two seasons ago, The Voice had already introduced another new concept to the show, the “Steal” – during the battle rounds, when a mentor chooses the contestant he/she wants to keep, the other mentors can push their button and bring to their teams the one contestant who lost the duet.

The “Steal” concept will also be used in this new round, with each of the mentors allowed to have one “steal” of a discarded contestant. Chris Martin will help out picking the ones who should win and the ones who lost, but can be still be saved.

Coldplay’s lead singer is set to appear in three episodes (March 31st, April 1st and April 7th) and he’ll be the fourth mentor this season, alongside Team Shakira’s Miranda Lambert, Team Adam’s Aloe Blacc, Team Usher’s Jill Scott and Team Blake’s The Band Perry.

The singer had already been appointed as the replacement for Keith Urban in The Voice Australia, and even though that particular gig never happened, this one sure will.
