‘Chinatown’ Prequel Series Coming Soon to Netflix

Deadline confirmed that Netflix has agreed to do a Chinatown prequel series with Executive Producers David Fincher, Robert Towne, and Josh Donen. Details about the series storyline will take place prior to the 1974 film and will focus on a young Jake Gittes at the beginning of his profession trying to put together a reputable career as a private investigator.

Oscar winning Robert Towne, the writer for the original Chinatown screenplay also wrote the pilot for the prequel series. David Fincher was interested in the concept so much that he become one of the first people to jump aboard the project. Fincher is known for his directorial collaborations with Netflix on shows like House of Cards and Mindhunter (which just debuted its second season in the latter part of the summer), and has agreed to help direct another Netflix film, Mank, that will be starring Gary Oldman. Josh Donen, who has worked with Fincher in the past has helped in producing House of Cards and Mindhunter, has also produced exceptional films and series including Gone Girl, Oz the Great and Powerful, and the series, Spartacus.

Released back in 1974, the original Chinatown which was directed by Roman Polanski and produced by the late Robert Evans (who recently passed away in October of this year) and Faye Dunaway playing Evelyn Mulwray alongside Jack Nicholson as detective Jake Gittes who is unknowingly tied up with the Mulwray family secrets, lies, corruption and abundant wealth.

In its time, the film was able to win countless awards including several highly praised awards including an Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay, not to mention several Golden Globe and BAFTA’s. Unlike its sequel film, The Two Jakes, which had Jack Nicholson reprise his roles as Jake Gittes in 1990, received far less than favorable reviews, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
