‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ Was Planned to Crossover with ‘Riverdale’ in Canceled Season 5

Just a few days after it was announced that Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is canceled after four seasons, the showrunner has revealed what was planned for the fifth season. Deadline has reported that Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, showrunner for Sabrina and the CW’s Riverdale, revealed via his Twitter that the two shows were meant to crossover in Sabrina‘s fifth season.

Riverdale and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina are both based on comics published by Archie Comics, and the shows themselves have long been confirmed to be part of the same universe. As Entertainment Weekly reports, there are a variety of connections between the series. Some are small details, such as the town of Riverdale being right next to Greendale, where Sabrina takes place. Others are much larger, with Cheryl Blossom of Riverdale appearing in season 3 of Sabrina, and Billy Marlin of Sabrina making an appearance in Riverdale‘s fourth season.

The exact details of what the crossover in season 5 of Sabrina are unknown. However, the cover image in the tweet suggests that season 5 of Sabrina would have been titled “Witch War,” and depict the witches of Greendale fighting those of Riverdale. In addition, the main casts of Riverdale and Sabrina are pictured, implying a potential conflict between them as well.

The fifth season is not entirely lost, as Aguirre-Sacasa confirms it will be adapted as a comic book. He also assures fans that season 4 will not leave them disappointed, even if it was not meant to be the last.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina‘s first three seasons are available to stream on Netflix now, with the fourth season premiering some time in 2020. Katy Keene, another series in the same universe, was canceled after one season by The CW last week. Riverdale has been renewed for a fifth season, which will premiere next year.
