Charly Clive, a British actress known for her work in Pure and The Lazarus Project, has secured the female lead role alongside Steve Carell (The Office, The Morning Show) in an upcoming HBO comedy series. Developed by Bill Lawrence (Ted Lasso, Scrubs, Shrinking), Matt Tarses (Scrubs, Sports Night), and Warner Bros. Television, the untitled single-camera series is highly anticipated and has already garnered considerable excitement from fans and industry insiders alike. According to a report by Deadline, Clive was chosen after a competitive selection process, which included chemistry reads with Carell among several actresses in their 30s, some of whom are recognizable names.
The series is set on a college campus and revolves around the intricate dynamics between an author (Carell) and his daughter (Clive). Clive joins Phil Dunster (Ted Lasso, The Devil’s Hour), who was previously announced as part of the cast, in what is shaping up to be a major project with wide-ranging appeal.
The show’s first season will consist of 10 half-hour episodes, with the pilot written by Lawrence and Tarses. Alongside Carell and Tarses, Lawrence, Jeff Ingold (Shrinking, Whiskey Cavalier), and Liza Katzer (Ted Lasso, Bad Monkey) of Doozer Productions serve as executive producers. Warner Bros. Television produces the series in collaboration with Doozer Productions, which operates under an overall deal with Lawrence and Tarses.
Clive is best recognized for her leading role in Channel 4’s 2019 series Pure. She is also half of the comedic duo “Britney,” alongside Ellen Robertson (Black Mirror, Portraits of Dangerous Women). Their stage show, inspired by Clive’s experience being diagnosed with a brain tumor at 23, has been performed at notable festivals like Edinburgh Fringe and was adapted into a TV pilot. Additionally, Clive appeared in the Sky Max series The Lazarus Project. She is represented by United Agents, Linden Entertainment, and Jackoway Austen.
