Netflix is developing a new comedy series starring Charlie Hall (Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, The Sex Lives of College Girls, Bel-Air). According to Deadline, Hall will also write the currently untitled project, with Alec Berg (Barry, Silicon Valley, Seinfeld) serving as executive producer and supervising writer.
The fictional comedy will center around a college fraternity drug ring and is described as being loosely inspired by recent events and allegations. The project comes after 14 people, including current and former Penn State students and one parent, were charged in connection with an alleged cocaine-trafficking ring that authorities said operated out of off-campus fraternity houses associated with Sigma Chi and Delta Upsilon.
Although the real-life allegations are serving as loose inspiration for the project, the upcoming Netflix series will tell a fictional story. Further details surrounding Hall’s character, the fraternity at the center of the series and the show’s overall storyline have not yet been revealed.
Berg will executive produce the series alongside Amy Solomon (Barry, Silicon Valley, Downforce) through his production banner. The project falls under Berg’s overall deal with Netflix, which he signed earlier this year.
Berg previously worked as a writer and producer on Seinfeld, which starred Hall’s mother, Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep, Seinfeld, Enough Said). He later served as an executive producer and showrunner on HBO’s Silicon Valley and co-created and executive produced Barry alongside Bill Hader (Saturday Night Live, It Chapter Two, Trainwreck).
Hall currently stars as a series regular in the Apple TV series Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, starring Tatiana Maslany (Perry Mason, Orphan Black, Stronger) and Jake Johnson (New Girl, Jurassic World, The Dink). The future of the Apple TV series has not yet been determined. Hall is also set to appear in the upcoming fourth season of HBO’s The White Lotus.
The Netflix project will mark another leading television role for Hall while also bringing him together with Berg, whose previous television work includes several acclaimed comedy series. Additional casting details, a series title and a release date for the untitled comedy have not yet been announced.
