Netflix has done an outstanding job with expanding and tying together all their shows in the Marvel universe. Jessica Jones helped jump start the upcoming Luke Cage series, Daredevil introduced Hell’s Kitchen to the brutal justice of The Punisher who quickly earned his own series, the upcoming series Iron Fist will help set up The Defenders which will bring together all the New York heroes, and Rosario Dawson is always on call to drop by any Marvel property. Now that Daredevil has been confirmed for third season, the question is how much will being a part of The Defenders affect the future of The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. Daredevil star Charlie Cox spoke at Wizard World Chicago 2016 on what changes fans can expect to see for season 3.
In season 2, Matt Murdock began pushing away those closest to him, abandoning his own life and becoming more devil than man. Matt tried to go solo, but Elektra, his psycho ex-girlfriend and current assassin, and Frank Castles, the new psycho vigilante in his life, kept popping up in his life. It’s safe to say that Matt isn’t really looking to team up, but with The Hand threatening the entire world, Matt knows he wont be able to go it alone. “At the end of season 2, [Matt] kinda fails” said Cox, “going into The Defenders, Matt is going to have learn that he needs help and that he can’t do it alone, and that some teamwork is going to be beneficial. so, whatever lessons he learns in The Defenders will then play into season 3 and how he goes forward from there.” It will be interesting to see what kind of life lessons Daredevil will learn from a superhuman alcoholic, a nearly indestructible hero-for-hire, and an orphaned martial arts master.
Rosario Dawson also spoke about her rather mysterious relationship with the Marvel shows. “When I do sign up, I sign up for episodes” said Dawson, “but they don’t tell me which shows.”When I do show up, I come in pretty late, so I wont get those first couple of episodes… I just come in the middle of all this insanity.” We may just see Dawson pop up in Luke Cage, Iron Fist, or The Punisher, who knows, we may just get a Night Nurse series to save Dawson the trouble of traveling from set to set at random times and she can just patch up all the vigilantes that New York seems to attract.
Marvel has also branched out from Netflix, with a new series Legion releasing this year on FX, and possible Runaways series coming to Hulu.
