After 14 notable seasons, Blue Bloods shocked fans back in December 2024 with the announcement of the show coming to an end. Blue Bloods made its mark on television after over a decade of seasons. With many beloved characters and actors, fans were upset to see the show end.
However, their goodbye wasn’t long as a Deadline article revealed a new drama series Boston Blue that stars Donnie Wahlberg (Blue Bloods) who will reprise his role as his beloved character Danny Regan. Not only do fans get a new series but an extension of the Blue Bloods universe. Blue Bloods takes place in New York City following the Reagan family working for the NYPD. Boston Blue will now take place in Boston, following Danny on his new career path. Danny will take a detective position in Boston, with his new partner Lena Peters, who also comes from a law enforcement family.
An insider shares with us in the same article that there were multiple options for a spin-off. “While CBS and CBS Studios, which produced Blue Bloods, had explored spinoffs from the popular family police drama, including one that would’ve had Danny Reagan move to Texas and another one with Tom Selleck, Boston Blue was not conceived as a Blue Bloods offshoot.” After several pitches, CBS found Boston to be the best location for Wahlberg and his character. As Wahlberg is a Boston native, the writers knew his character would thrive in the setting. Not only will we see the star return but Wahlberg will also have the opportunity to executive produce the show.
Viewers will also see the writers Brandon Sonnier (The Blacklist) and Brandon Margolis (Alert: Missing Persons Unit) return for the series. Both Sonnier and Margolis will take on the role of show-running as well. With the same writers and cast Boston Blue is set for a great show.
