CBS has confirmed that The Neighborhood will be renewed for an eight season, but it will be its last. According to TV Line, the series is leaving wiggle room for potential spin offs.
TV Line quoted CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach as saying “The brilliant cast and creative team at The Neighborhood led by the incomparable Cedric the Entertainer have brought levity, laughter and poignant storylines to Monday nights for seven incredible seasons.” She added, “The Neighborhood is a strong ratings performer for CBS and one of the top comedies on TV. We believe the show’s loyal fans deserve a proper farewell season full of the trademark humor and heartfelt moments that are synonymous with the series.”
The Neighborhood first premiered in 2018, and now seven seasons have aired on network. According to TV Line, The Neighborhood continues to be a top-rated network sitcom despite a decline in viewership. This season, the show has drawn an estimated 4.9 million total viewers, including streaming, marking a 16% drop from Season 6. Among the 10 scripted sitcoms currently on broadcast TV, it ranks fourth, behind Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, Ghosts, and Shifting Gears.
The show follows Dave Johnson, a midwesterner who makes the move to a Los Angeles suburb that is much different from his roots. Max Greenfield (New Girl, The Running Point) plays Johnson opposite Beth Behrs (2 Broke Girls, American Pie Presents: The Book of Love) who stars as his wife, Gemma. The two have a son, Grover, played by Hank Greenspan (13 Reasons Why, Alexa’s Had It). The family moves in next to grumpy neighbor Calvin Butler, played by Cedric The Entertainer (The Original Kings of Comedy, Barbershop), and his wife Tina, played by Tichina Arnold (Big Momma’s House, Everybody Hates Chris). The couple has two adult sons; Malcolm, played by Sheaun Mckinny (Vice Principals, Know Thy Enemy) and Marty, played by Marel Spears (The Mayor, Always a Bridesmaid).
Calvin initially dislikes the Johnsons, viewing their move as evidence of his neighborhood’s gentrification. Butler’s opinions toward the family shifts as their relationship deepens.
As per TV Line the seventh season sets up the show for potential spinoff. The new series may premiere during the 2025-2026 season and follow Marty and Malcom as they “embark on new adventures, finally leaving their parents’ nest to start the next chapter of their lives, finding themselves the newcomers in a neighborhood that’s both close but yet world apart: Venice Beach,” reports TV Line.
