CBS has ordered a pilot of an upcoming comedy hailing from Emily Halpern (Carol’s Second Act) and Sarah Haskins (Carol’s Second Act), entitled, The Smart One, according to Deadline. In addition, the network has agreed to put another series under development, coming from the same duo, entitled, Middle Class Murdochs.
The Smart One surrounds two sisters who are forced to live together after the “smart one,” or the one who was destined to be successful, moves in with the “screw-up,” the one who actually became successful, as Deadline explains. Meanwhile, Middle Class Murdochs follows the owner of a successful carpet store in Ohio as he retires and decides which of his grown children will take over the business. Nedaa Sweiss (The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon) and Jonathan Adler (The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon) will executive produce alongside Halpern and Haskins.
Halpern and Haskins created and executive produced the CBS comedy Carol’s Second Act most recently, which aired for one season and starred Patricia Heaton (The Middle). They also co-wrote the screenplay for the 2019 film Booksmart. They also worked on the CBS series black-ish, the NBC series Good Girls, and the ABC series The Mayor.
