The Hollywood Reporter has announced that there will be quite the shake-up in the upcoming fall schedule on CBS. The medical drama Watson, originally slated for midseason, was advanced to fill the gap left by CIA, which was postponed due to production delays and a showrunner change.
The Hollywood Reporter confirms that the showrunner changes will see David Hudgins (Friday Night Lights, Past Life) replaced by Warren Leight (In Treatment, The Night We Never Met). They also confirm that the production delays have to do with having yet to fill the roles around the lead of Tom Ellis (Tell Me Lies, Exploding Kittens). Although the writers are already busy putting the script together, filming is said to be planned for the early fall.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, CBS’s fall schedule will launch as per the usual, with the bulk of its lineup launching in mid-October to coincide with the early NFL season. New episodes of reality TV and news programming will come in early to give a reprieve from the summer reruns. This means shows like Survivor, The Amazing Race, 48 Hours, and 60 Minutes will return in the final week of September.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that mid-October is set up to be packed, with Sunday, October 12th being the biggest day of all. Not only will there be an NFL double header, but also there will be the season premieres of Matlock and Elsbeth, not to mention an episode of the embattled 60 Minutes. This is an effort to lock fall viewers settling in for the season into their viewership ratings because after that, 60 Minutes will resume its original spot on Thursdays, leaving Sunday with a little less firepower. Watson, now that it has been moved up and will be available a lot sooner than fans had expected, will see a Monday night premiere date on October 13th, following FBI. Saving the best for last, CBS has chosen to put its most-watched series, Tracker, down for an October 19th debut.
