Caught In The Dark: Netflix’s New Stephen King-Esque Thriller ‘Below’ Shatters Global Streaming Records

A new reign of terror and mystery officially seized the streaming world. According to Screenrant, Netflix’s new original thriller series, Below set in a small town set in Newfoundland, where a strange phenamamon in the form of a creature lays within the water surrounding the town. The series follows widowed fishman, Calvin Penney, played by Josh Hartnett (Lucky Number Slevin, The Bear) who teams up with Marine Biologist, Fonda Howander, played by Mackenzie Davis (Black Mirror, Blade Runner) to find a solution.

Jesse McKeown (The Umbrella Academy, The Big Charade) created the series and served as its showrunner. His previous credits include writing and producing on other hit shows, such as the critically acclaimed Canadian comedy Letterkenny.

Reported by Screenrant, as of right now, Below currently holds the number-one spot with 21.2 million views, outperforming other original series such as East of Eden, Is It Cake?, and Haunt Hotel. On Rotten Tomatoes, the series received a “Certified Fresh” rating of 87% based on 45 reviews; however, ScreenRant’s own review gave the show only 5 out of 10 stars. One of the series critics, Simon Gallagher writes their own thoughts which states,“I grew increasingly frustrated as the mystery box turned into a mystery Russian nesting doll, with the core idea getting increasingly smaller as layers were added on and peeled off.”

Sated by Screenrant, other key cast members who have contributed significantly to the show’s widespread popularity include Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things, The New Mutants), Ruby Stokes (Lockwood & Co., Una), and Kaleb Horn (Revival, The Kid Detective).Since its release, the series has become the most-watched Canadian original show in a single week—an achievement closely tied to its authentic setting in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

The finale showed that Calvin and his son, Wally, towed the giant iceberg, which surprisingly held the mother cephalopod’s egg sac thus stopping the military from destroying it and exposing a secret family scheme. All episodes of the Netflix thriller miniseries, Below, are available to stream.
