‘Catastrophe’ Picked Up For Two More Seasons

Rob and Sharon will have two more seasons to figure out how to put up with each other while raising kids.

According to Variety, U.K.’s Channel 4 has ordered a third and fourth season of dramedy critical darling Catastrophe (in the U.S. the series streams on Amazon). The series was created by and stars Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney. Avalon Television, Birdbath Productions and Merman produce the series for Channel 4.

In a statement released by Channel 4 Delaney and Horgan said, “We are thrilled to be making a third series of Catastrophe. Rob and Sharon are a blast to spend time with. And we’re not talking about ourselves in the third person, we’re talking about the characters. We’re eager to breathe life back into Rob and Sharon. Okay, now we’re talking about us. In the first series Rob and Sharon went through a lot (us) and even more in the second series (back to the characters). We’re looking forward to putting Rob and Sharon (both us and the characters) through further pain for your enjoyment (now we’re talking about you).”

Channel 4’s Head of Comedy Phil Clarke said, “I am thrilled to commission a third and fourth series of the multi award-winning Catastrophe. It’s a welcome return for the brave, razor edge, excruciatingly honest and painfully funny portrayal of a modern, long term relationship.”

Joint MD of Avalon Television Jon Thoday said about the pickup, “I’m delighted we’re bringing the show back for a third and fourth series with Channel 4, whose initial vision and immediate support of the exciting show has been exceptional.”

Catastrophe has been a major critical and awards hit for Channel 4 and Amazon. The series has won two Royal TV Society awards, a BAFTA TV Craft award, a Rose D’Or and a Women in TV and Film award among others.

The series follows the unlikely couple of an American, Rob (Delaney), and an Irish woman, Sharon (Horgan), as they navigate the ups and downs of being in a relationship after Rob gets Sharon pregnant during a week-long fling. Season 2 of the series ended on quite a cliffhanger in regards to Rob and Sharon’s relatonship, so season 3 will have a lot to explore between them. Seasons 3 and 4 are both set to be six episodes keeping in line with the last two seasons. Production of season 3 will begin in November and is aiming for a premiere on Channel 4 next year.

Catastrophe also stars Mark Bonnar, Jonathan Forbes, Daniel Lapaine and Ashley Jensen. Ben Taylor (Divorce, Cuckoo) directed the series, and Jack Bayles produces the series with executive producers Richard Allen-Turner, Kara Baker, Jon Thoday, Rob Delaney and Sharon Horgan.
