In the 1960’s Star Trek made it to the small screen and has enjoyed bounds of popularity ever since. 50 years later, Star Trek has gone through several iterations: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise, and several movies. The most recent of these including Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond. But the Star Trek franchise is moving back to television on CBS. Despite initial doubts and delays, the project is still moving forward, still listed to air in May 2017, per Mic Network.
According to E News, the cast of the next chapter of Star Trek already includes Michelle Yeoh, Doug Jones, Chris Obi, and Sonequa Martin-Green. This week Entertainment Weekly reported the casting of three more key roles. Maulik Pancholy of 30 Rock and Weeds plays Dr. Nambue, the Chief Medical Officer of Captain Han Bo’s (Michelle Yeoh) spacecraft.
Joining Dr. Nambue on Han Bo’s ship Shenzhou will be Ensign Connor portrayed by Sam Vartholomeos of The Following. In addition, Terry Serpico of Army Wives will be playing Admiral Anderso.
The show has suffered some setbacks, like the loss of the original show runner Bryan Fuller, but it looks like CBS is still charting course for TV, though later and later than originally planned.
The last message of the promo encourages viewers to “watch every Star Trek episode ever made.” This would be quite an ambitious feat, but if you are a CBS All Access subscriber, you really can watch every Star Trek episode created to date on the CBS website or on smartphone or tablet. But even those who aren’t All Access subscribers are likely to catch the show which Mirror reported as “Netflix-bound” on this popular format.
Mic Network has said that it is unlikely that Star Trek: Discovery will meet its premiere date goal and Entertainment Weekly has reported that Discovery may not debut until 2018, but maybe if CBS throw it into warp we’ll get to see the show hit the screen in May of 2017.
