Deadline reports that Jane Levy (Evil Dead, Fun Size) is joining NBC’s single camera, untitled comedy. Akiva Schaffer (The Naked Gun, Hot Rod) has also joined as director and producer of the pilot.
According to Deadline, the untitled show is going to be a comedy mystery and will be a half-hour project. It centers around a few detectives that follow the traditional methods of investigating. The show will center on Mickey Wilder, who is played by Jake Johnson (New Girl, Let’s Be Cops). Once an LAPD cop, Wilder changes his profession to become a private eye. His boss, Garner Taggert, is played by Keith David (Hazbin Hotel, The Princess and the Frog) and runs a PI agency where his sons, Mitch and Mickey, are head of said office. Taggert is described as a tough guy with a more traditional view of the world. Levy plays the very smart and resourceful Faye, an investigative journalist. Cunning and smart, she is a force of nature. The comedy comes from writers and executive producers Dan Goor (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Killing It) and Luke Del Tredici (Arizona).
Deadline states that this project returns Levy to NBC, where she previously played Zoey Clarke in Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, which started in early 2020. Only running for two seasons, the show was unique due to the viewer hearing Zoey’s thoughts as a song. The short-lived role garnered Levy Levy a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy Series. Levy also starred in The Office as a recurring side character.
According to Deadline, The casting of the new untitled show is done by Bialy/Thomas & Associates and Universal Television, part of Universal Studio Group. Levy’s agent is UTA, Rise Management and Sloane Offer Weber and Dern.
Johnson won’t be the only PI NBC is seeking to book this season. mxdwn previously reported the Peacock network is reviving The Rockford Files. The new version sees David Boreanaz (Angel, Bones) taking up the role as James Rockford, a PI that resumes his career after serving time for a crime he didn’t commit. Boreanaz will be joined by Michaela McManus (Code Black, The 100) and Jacki Weaver (Stage Mother, Silver Linings Playbook).
