As reported by Deadline, Patti LuPone, a three-time Tony winner and highly acclaimed actress in the world of musical theater, has joined the cast of the upcoming Marvel spinoff series Agatha: Coven of Chaos for Disney+. The series, which is set to be headlined by Kathryn Hahn (Bad Moms) reprising her role as the villainous Agatha Harkness, was inspired by Hahn’s Emmy-winning performance in the song “Agatha All Along” from WandaVision.
In addition to Hahn and LuPone (American Horror Story), the cast of Agatha: Coven of Chaos also includes male lead Joe Locke (Heartstopper), Aubrey Plaza (The White Lotus), Ali Ahn (The Diplomat), Maria Dizzia (Christine), and Sasheer Zamata (Home Economics). Locke and Plaza are rumored to be playing villainous roles; Ahn and Dizza are allegedly playing witches, per Deadline. Emma Caulfield Ford (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) is also expected to reprise her role as Dottie from WandaVision. While LuPone’s role in the series is being kept under wraps, there is speculation that she may be playing a witch as well.
WandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer, who has a joint overall deal with Marvel and 20th Television, serves as writer and executive producer on the spinoff. Schaeffer has previously worked on projects such as Captain Marvel and the Black Widow film, further solidifying Marvel’s commitment to bringing diverse and talented women to the forefront of their storytelling.
In addition to her Tony Awards, LuPone has also won two Olivier Awards and two Grammy Awards for her impressive career in musical theater. She has appeared in a variety of stage productions, including Evita, Les Misérables, and Sunset Boulevard, and has also had roles in film and television. LuPone is set to appear in the upcoming surrealist comedy horror film Beau Is Afraid, which was written, directed, and produced by Ari Aster (Midsommar). LuPone is represented by Echo Lake Entertainment, The Artists Partnership in the UK, and attorney Jeanne Newman.
