Bridgerton breakout Regé-Jean Page (The Gray Man, Roots) will executive produce — and likely star in — Apple TV’s series adaptation of Funny You Should Ask, a 2022 romance novel by BookTok luminary Elisa Sussman (Drawn That Way. Totally and Completely Fine) according to a report by Deadline Tuesday morning. Anonymous sources claim that Tomorrow Studios, in conjunction with Page and girlfriend Emily Brown’s company A Mighty Stranger Production, is in the early stages of composing a full treatment of the viral novel for the small screen with Page himself at the helm.
Funny You Should Ask tells the story of Chani Horowitz, a hapless journalist who finds herself in the throes of Hollywood heartthrob Gabe Parker while writing a puff piece. What starts as a series of interviews gradually evolves into a doomed romance between the two; doomed, that is, until Gabe and Chani reconnect ten years later, and the excitement and trepidation that defined the pair’s first encounter comes rushing back.
Should Deadline’s report prove true, it would mark the second time Page has played the leading man in the adaptation of an esteemed romance novel after his starring role as Duke of Hastings Simon Basset in season one of Netflix’s Bridgerton. It would also mark his return to television after his more recent focus on movies, portraying an NCSC officer in Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag earlier this year and paladin Xenk Yandar in 2023’s Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
Deadline’s source alleged that Rachel Alter, best known for her work on Netflix’s Outer Banks, will write Funny You Should Ask, with additional executive producers including Robin Schwartz (Tucker, Central Park), Carolyn Daucher (Close, Long Distance), Marty Adelstein (Hanna, Black Christmas), Becky Clements (Snowpiercer, One Piece), and Alissa Bachner (Physical, The Better Sister). Deadline also reached out to an Apple TV representative for comment, but declined. While the release date for the purported series is still pending, those interested by Funny You Should Ask’s unique premise will have to settle for picking up Elissa Sussmann’s critically-acclaimed novel wherever books are sold.
