Jennie Kim, a member of South Korean pop group BLACKPINK, has been spotted in the trailer for the upcoming HBO series, The Idol. Jennie Kim, known by her mononym, Jennie, has received many fan-driven accolades for her work with BLACKPINK, including a shared MTV Music Award, People’s Choice Award, and Teen Choice Award. Jennie seems to be making her scripted series debut in the HBO series.
Euphoria creator Sam Levinson helms The Idol, and it is co-created, starring, and executive produced by pop music sensation Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, who will make his debut as a leading player in the scripted project. Lily Rose-Depp (A Faithful Man) leads the series, which will follow a pop singer (Depp) who enters into a complicated relationship with a mysterious club owner and cult leader (Tesfaye).
The series previously announced cast members such as Suzanna Son (Red Rocket), Maya Eshet (All Rise), Tyson Ritter (Lodge 49), Kate Lyn Sheil (City on a Hill), Liz Caribel Sierra (God’s Time), and Finley Rose Slater (Days of Our Lives). It was later reported, however, that The Idol would undergo massive adjustments with Son and director Amy Seimetz (Atlanta) exiting the series. It is unclear which cast members are still involved with the series. Deadline later reported that the show was forced into a creative overhaul because Tesfaye felt the series was leaning too much into a “female perspective.”
BLACKPINK recently revealed that they would drop new music in August 2022, two years after they released their full-length project, The Album. They will also embark on a world tour soon, although the dates are unknown. BLACKPINK is currently the most subscribed music group on YouTube, surpassing pop sensations like Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish.
HBO has not yet announced what role Jennie will play in the series or when The Idol will air on the network.
