On Wednesday, January 4, 2023, an announcement was made via Variety that Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange, Sherlock) had officially found his next project with Netflix. Cumberbatch is set to star in a six-episode limited series titled Eric.
Eric is a series set in 1980s New York around Vincent Sullivan, a successful lead puppet maker and puppeteer of America’s most popular children show. Vincent is on top of the world when his life begins to unravel when his young son disappears. After dealing with substance addiction and now homelessness and unemployment, Vincent finds that his only companion is Eric, a seven-foot tall blue puppet, who leads him on a journey to find his son and a way home, according to ComicBook.
Originally, this miniseries was announced in November 2021, according to Variety.
Written by Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady, Suffragette), Eric will also be executive produced by Morgan and directed by Lucy Forbes (In My Skin, The End of the F***ing World). The miniseries is also going to be executive produced by Lucy Dyke (Black Mirror, The Split), Carolyn Strauss (Chernobyl, Game of Thrones), and Jane Featherstone (MI-5, Chernobyl), according to Collider.
