According to Screenrant, Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender is facing a change in leadership as it gears up for its final two seasons. Albert Kim (Sleepy Hollow), who served as show runner for the first season, has stepped down. His major role within the series was recreating big moments from the animated series, such as Aang’s avatar state in the northern water tribe.. The series has received mixed reviews from critics, who stated the unnecessary changes in source material.
Screenrant reports Netflix issued a brief statement: “With Kim stepping down as showrunner for the remainder of the series, it’s unclear if the same creative vision of season 1 will continue into the future.”
According to Screenrant, the second and third seasons of the series will be based on Book Two: Earth and Book Three: Fire. The season will be produced by executive producers Christine Boylan (Hoss) and Jabbar Raisani (Alien Outpost). The duo already has some familiarity with the show, and could offer a sense of continuity, but raise questions as well.
Fans of the original will be left to wonder on how similar or different the adaptation will be with regarding the new leadership. According to Screenrant, the second season will introduce the iconic blind earthbender, Toph, and Long Feng, while maintaining the general plot. Among the members expected to reprise their roles are Gordon Cormier (Lost in Space) as Aang, Kiawentiio (What If?) as Katara, Ian Ousley (13 Reason Why) as Sokka, Dallas Liu (Tekken) as Zuko, and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (Ahsoka) as Iroh.
Only time will tell how Boylan and Raisani will navigate the uncharted waters of the Avatarverse. Fans will be eager to see if the new leadership can steer the series towards critical and commercial acclaim, ultimately delivering a live-action adaptation that captures the magic of the animated classic. The entire first season is available to watch now on Netflix.
