According to The Hollywood Reporter, Apple TV+ has recently renewed their comedy series Platonic for a second season. This is a surprise to many as the series was originally described as a limited series and due to the success of the first season, it gained a second one. Since its debut back in May, the series has gained much praise and the streaming network goes as far as to say that it is a “hit comedy.”
Matt Cherniss, Head of Programming for Apple TV+, said in a statement via The Hollywood Reporter, “Since the first episodes of Platonic debuted on Apple TV+, global audiences have been charmed by the hilarious, wildly fun and relatable friendship that Rose and Seth have brought to life through their charismatic performances.”
Platonic follows two former best friends who are approaching midlife and eventually reconnect after a long time of not knowing one another. Since catching up with one another, their lives have become more consuming and destabilized in the most hilarious of fashions. They are not insecure about how close they are as friends as they are nothing more than friends.
The series cast includes Rose Byrne (Insidious: The Red Door) as Sylvia, Seth Rogen (This Is the End) as Will, Luke Macfarlane (Over There) as Charlie Greeves, Tre Hale (Love and Monsters) as Andy, Andrew Lopez (The Bear) as Reggie, Carla Gallo (Get Him to the Greek) as Katie, Vinny Thomas (Ahsoka) as Omar, Guy Branum (The Other Two) as Stewart, Sophia Kopera (The Fabelmans) as Maeve, Sophia Leonard (Fantasy Island) as Frances, Max Matenko (This Is Us) as Simon, and many others.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Byrne and Rogen both star in the series as well as serve as executive producers. The series is created by Nick Stoller (Neighbors) and his wife Francesca Delbanco (Friends From College). Rogen spoke about the switch from a limited series earlier this month.
“Honestly, we had talked about doing more during the first season, but I get really nervous about how it’s going to be received,” Rogen told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m not a count-your-eggs-before-they-hatch guy. I’ve done that thing where I drive around Friday night of opening weekend for my movies and go to the theaters and there’s no one in them. I really just wanted to see if we were happy with it when it came out — and if everyone else was happy with it. I was kind of nervous about how high my standards were for what we were doing, and I wanted to make sure that we could actually do it. And then once I saw that we could, I was like, ‘OK, we should keep doing it.’”
Season one of Platonic is available to stream on Apple TV+.
