According to The Hollywood Reporter, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters may or may not be back for third instalment but it will most likely look a bit different compared to the first two seasons. Apple TV and producer Legendary Television are in talks for a third season of the show set in Legendary’s Monsterverse, which has ties to the Godzilla and King Kong movies of the past decade.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, the second season of the series aired earlier this year, filling in events in the first part of the franchise’s timeline. If the series gains a third season, it will go in a new direction, with new writers. Matt Fraction (Iron Man 2, Thor: God of Thunder) and Chris Black (Outcast, Red Widow) created the series, with Black serving as showrunner on season two. Black, Jen Roskind (Animals., Mrs., America), Matt Shakman (Cut Bank, Just the Ten of Us), Lawrence Trilling (Group Sex, Future Shock), Andrew Colville (Mad Men, Severance), and Toho Co.’s Hiro Matsuoka (Monster Hunter, Godzilla: King of the Monster) and Takemasa Arita (Kaiju No.8, Bartender: Glass of God) executive produced season two.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is a sci-fi monster action series on Apple TV+ that spans three generations and two main timelines: the 1950s origins of the secret organization Monarch and the present day following the 2014 Godzilla attack on San Francisco. The series stars Anna Sawai (Ninja Assassin, Star Wars: Visions), Kiersey Clemons (Lady and the Tramp, Hearts Beat Loud), Ren Watabe (461 Days of Bento), Wyatt Russell (Night Swim, 22 Jump Street), Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, Escape from New York), Joe Tippett (The Morning Show, Mare of Easttown), Mari Yamamoto (Rental Family, Tokyo Vice), Anders Holm (About My Fathers, How to Be Single) and many more.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, potential changes to Monarch will not impact the prequel series starring Wyatt Russell (Night Swim, Disclosure Day), which Apple greenlit late last year; Joby Harold (Edge of Tomorrow, Obi-Wan Kenobi) is attached as showrunner. Meanwhile, the franchise’s next feature film, Godzilla vs. Kong: Supernova, is slated to hit theaters in 2027.
