This week Disney Plus’ Andor delivered the penultimate arc in its 12-episode second season. The prequel series to Rogue One follows Cassian Andor from ragged thief to resistance leader. Actor Kyler Soller (Fury, Bodies), who portrays Imperial foot solider Syril Karn, unpacked his character’s fate with TV Line, and the multiple versions that were considered. Spoilers for season two, episode eight entitled “Who Are You?” are ahead.
Season two takes place a year after season one’s civil unrest at Ferrix, where Soller’s Syril has a close encounter with Diego Luna’s (Maya and the Three, Wander Darkly) Andor. After being demoted, Syril thinks he’s found glory in a covert mission infiltrating the wealthy city of Ghorman. Little does he know, that the intel he’s been spoon-fed by his lover, Denise Gough’s (The Stolen Girl, Too Close) Dedra Merro, is a rouge, hiding the truly genocidal scheme the Empire has set into place. Episode eight is the climax of this lie and truth colliding in ruthless violence against an innocent people, whose humanity was stripped in years-long propaganda.
As Syril’s entire belief system cracks, he’s met with the actor he holds accountable for his demise: Cassian Andor. In a mere second, he sees nothing but red and attacks the rebel leader unprovoked amid the wartorn chaos.
“Syril is pouring all of his frustration and anger and pain, of what he just discovered about Dedra and the Empire and the massacre that he’s witnessing, into that moment,” Soller told TVLine. “In a way, Syril blames Cassian for everything in Syril’s life up until that point. Cassian has kind of become a totem for that, and Syril wants to destroy the totem.”
Syril manages to get the upperhand on Cassian, who remains dumbfounded by this random stranger’s attack. This query spoken aloud manages to stop the company man in his tracks. Andor stampers “Who are you?” toward the gun-wielding Syril, who in that moment, must face he doesn’t know anymore. What he saw as justice — bringing an unknown outside agitator to a heel — was nothing more than egregious injustice and colonial greed. Syril’s epiphany comes too late, as he’s struck dead by the gun of a Ghorman rebel leader he betrayed.
Soller confesses to TV Line that Andor’s final words to him saw many variations.
“I remember speaking to [Andor creator] Tony [Gilroy] and Diego about this many, many times,” Soller shared via TV Line. “They couldn’t figure out what the last line in that scene should be. Is it, ‘Who are you?’ Is it, ‘You!’? Is it, ‘Why are you here?’ All these different permutations.”
Soller details to TV Line he was “thrilled” with the finished product.
The last three episodes of Andor‘s second season stream next Tuesday, May 12 at 9 p.m. ET on Disney Plus.
