The bestselling novel The Most Fun We Ever Had will soon be coming to the small screen, courtesy of an executive producer team that includes Amy Adams and Laura Dern. The drama series is currently in development at HBO, with the book’s author, Claire Lombardo, set to write the television adaptation. Joining Dern and Adams as EP’s are Stacy O’Neil and Jayme Lemons. Anya Epstein, whose producer credits include shows like The Affair and The Deuce, will serve as showrunner. Lombardo, meanwhile, will co-executive produce alongside Kate Clifford.
The Most Fun We Ever Had centers on the lives of the four Sorenson sisters over a fifty year span. Each lives a very different life replete with unique demons, but, per the novel’s official description, they “share the lingering fear that they will never find a love quite like their parents’.” The lives of each become complicated when the son one sister put up for adoption resurfaces fifteen years later.
Both Adams and Dern have a recent history with HBO. The former starred in the 2018 limited series Sharp Objects for the premium network, which received multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. Additionally, Adams is attached to The Most Fun We Ever Had through her production company Bond Group Entertainment, which has a first-look deal with the network. The company is also producing the limited series Poisonwood Bible for HBO.
Dern, meanwhile, starred in HBO’s limited series turned two season affair Big Little Lies, which boasts multiple wins across a spectrum of awards shows, including an Emmy for Outstanding Limited Series. She is attached through her own company, Jaywalker Pictures, which is producing multiple series for the network including The Dolls with collaborator Issa Rae.
The announcement of The Most Fun We Ever Had comes a day after HBO announced new late night pilot with comedian Sarah Silverman. It joins a slate of shows in production that includes drama Mare of Easttown with Kate Winslet, sci-fi series Demimonde from J.J. Abrams, and a drama from Adam McKay centered on the LA Lakers in the 1980’s.
HBO has yet to indicate when The Most Fun We Ever Had is expected to debut.
