‘American Woman’ cancelled by Paramount after one season

American Woman, which premiered its season one this past June, has already been cut for any additional seasons. The show was created by John Riggi, a producer and writer known for 30 Rock and The Larry Sanders Show. It starred Alicia Silverstone (Clueless), Mena Suvari (American Beauty), and Jennifer Bartels (Broken).

American Beauty surrounds posh and unconventional mother, Bonnie (Silverstone), struggling to raise her two daughters after leaving her husband amid the rise of second-wave feminism in 1970s Los Angeles. Bonnie also comes to rely on the help of her two best friends, Kathleen (Suvari) and Diana (Bartels) as they each discover their own brand of independence in a world reluctant to give in to it. It was inspired by the childhood of reality star, Kyle Richards. The new series started off at a respectable ratings start. Namely, in the female demos. When it debuted, 1 million viewers tuned in live. However, the viewership dropped steadily over the course of its 11 episode run.

It was originally developed for Viacom’s TV Land, but was moved to Spike last year ahead of the latter network’s rebranding as the Paramount Network, according to Variety. The first season has a 6.1/10 rating on IMDB.
