First and foremost, what you’re about to read contains spoilers. You have been warned.
This season of American Horror Story (AHS) has been much anticipated with its connection to its season 3 plot, Coven. Tonight’s episode, “Forbidden Fruit”, dug in and gave the viewers the necessary input to how the witches in Coven correlate to the disaster of Apocalypse and Michael Langdon (Cody Fern).
To recap, Michael Langdon is a key character from Murder House, which was the first season of AHS back in 2011. He was the baby who was conceived by a spirit and a human, turning into something rather demonic. According to medium Billie Dean Howard (Sarah Paulson), a child created by a ghost and a living person would be the Antichrist and would bring about the end of times. His demonic sense became much more apparent in tonight’s episode as the viewers were able to gather more information about his past as well.
The season Coven follows a coven of descendants of the Salem witches in New Orleans as they fight to see who would become the next Supreme- the most powerful witch of them all.
Last weeks episode ended with the deaths of all but Michael Langdon and Ms. Miriam Mead (Katy Bates). This was until Cordelia Goode (Paulson), Zoe Benson (Taissa Farmiga), and Madison Montgomery (Emma Roberts) made an appearance and revived Mallory (Billie Lourd), Coco (Leslie Grossman), and Dinah (Adina Porter). The three that were revived were told by Cordelia that they were given an identity spell to protect them and also to keep them from knowing their true selves.
Tonight’s episode also brought us back to three years before the end happened, to when the outpost was The Hawthorne School for a male coven of warlocks to practice and learn magic. Considerably the equivalent to Miss Robichaux’s Academy for the female witches, although it was noted that no male warlock could ever be a supreme. The women dominate the magical world as far as witches and warlocks are concerned.
Michael Langdon shed some light on the robotic Ms. Mead, who he told was modeled after the mother-figure who was the only being he ever trusted and loved- a devil worshipping woman who seemed essential into Michael honing is satanic abilities. Many were probably wondering what happened to Constance Langdon (Jessica Lange), who was the one to take Michael in at the end of Murder House. She will be reprising her role as Constance in an upcoming episode.

Langdon, due to horrifying video footage of him murdering a detective who was beating him during questioning, was discovered by the men in charge of The Hawthorne School (played by Cheyenne Jackson, Billy Porter, Jon Jon Briones, and BD Wong). The Grand Chancellor (Briones) explained that an “Alpha warlock” supplants the Supreme witch in coven hierarchy. After seeing what Langdon could do, they were all convinced that he was the one. Moore (Jackson) was upcoming about his reservations of the darkness in Michael’s powers.
The warlocks summoned the witches to an emergency council meeting to discuss Langdon and how they wanted the witches to perform the Seven Wonders of Witchcraft- a necessary and dangerous test to prove you are the Supreme. Very few witches are worthy of taking it as death is a likely probability if they aren’t powerful enough.
“Men are simply not equal to women when it comes to magical ability,” Cordelia said with much dismay. Cordelia brings up the death of Misty Day (Lily Rabe), who died during the Seven Wonders test, as a reason to not but Langdon through the unnecessary danger. The warlock council then brought up Queenie (Gabourey Sidibe), “the black girl you left behind.” Queenie survived the Coven season, but later reprised her role when she checked into the haunted Hotel Cortez in Hotel. We are shown flashbacks of how Cordelia was not powerful enough to rescue Queenie from the everlasting realm of Hotel Cortez.
The end of the episode shows Michael Langdon rescuing Queenie from the hotel as well as Madison from her personalized hell. Something Cordelia could not do. When she sees what he has done, she collapsed to the ground due to something she had foreseen.
Stay tuned next Wednesday at 10 P.M. eastern standard time on FX to find out what happens next on American Horror Story: Apocalypse.
