American Gods have hired new show runner for season two. Jesse Alexander will become the new showrunner to the show. He has worked on Star Trek: Discovery, Hannibal, Lost, Alias, and Heroes.He will share showrunner duties with Neil Gaiman (the author of the novel). Gaiman said to The Hollywood Reporter, “I’m thrilled that Jesse is [the] showrunner. He loves and understands the book, he loves and understands the TV series and he’s dedicated to making future seasons of American Gods as good and as beautiful and as unique as they can be. Shadow’s journey is going to take him, and Mr. Wednesday, and the New Gods and the Old, to some very strange places. I’m glad that we, and the cast and crew, will have Jesse shepherding us on the way.”
American Gods is a story about conflict between new and old mythological figures. The series stars Ricky Whittle (Shadow Moon), who is an ex-con who finds himself in a tug-of-war between America’s old gods like Odin (Ian McShane) and Media (who was played by Gillian Anderson, but she said she will not return for season two).
Bryan Fuller and Michael Green were the creators of the show; however, they left abruptly after season one. It is unknown why they left, but it is speculated that it was partly because of budget disagreements. In January during the TCA Starz CEO Chris Albrecht said, “Not surprisingly if you’ve seen the show it’s not an inexpensive show. Budget is always a factor although Fremantle has been terrific in wanting to invest. It’s a big show, it’s a monster show and it’s faced many of the challenges that terrific complex premium shows face trying to get seasons, especially when art comes before commerce.”
