Amazon’s ‘The Boys’ Expected To Begin Filming Season Three In The Next Month

The successful superhero series The Boys is preparing for the release of its third season and will begin to film the upcoming season in the next month, according to Screen Rant. Based on the comic book series from Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, the television adaptation premiered in the summer of 2019 with an eight-episode season. Developed for television by its showrunner Eric Kripke (Supernatural), the series witnessed continued success with its second season in 2020. Kripke has since described the upcoming third season and its writing process as “fun and breezy” despite the virtual limitations due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Boys is an Amazon original series that centers on a team of vigilantes, led by Karl Urban’s (Dredd) Billy Butcher, fighting against an evil and corrupt corporation Vought, which monitors and controls the world’s evil and selfish superheroes. Despite being announced for third season renewal at the 2020 Comic-Con panel in July, the aim was to begin production in the early stages of 2021, but was an uncertain goal due to COVID-19. Via Screen Rant, actor Antony Starr (Banshee), who portrays Homelander on the show, stated that the cast doesn’t have “a specific date yet, but in the not-too-distant future, within a month or so…we’re shooting in the winter which is going to be a little difficult, it limits us to interiors, initially. So it’s a very staggered intake of cast to the shooting schedule this season.” The production for The Boys mainly takes place in Toronto.

The series cast on top of Urban and Starr includes Erin Moriarty (True Detective), Jack Quaid (The Hunger Games), Tomer Capon (Fauda), Dominique McElligott (Moon), Laz Alonso (Avatar), Karen Fukuhara (Suicide Squad), Jessie Usher (Shaft), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl), Nathan Mitchell (Supernatural), Aya Cash (You’re the Worst), and for the second season Shawn Ashmore (The Following). For the upcoming third season, it has been revealed that Jensen Ackles (Supernatural) will join the cast as one of Vought’s original superheroes, Soldier Boy. Check out roundtable discussion with the cast and Kripke from August 2020 ahead of the series’ second season premiere for more insight on the series and its characters’ motivations.

With The Boys’ success on Amazon, the streaming service has already greenlit spin-off series during the release of its second season this past fall.
