Amazon’s The Boys held a panel with Comic Con today to promote it’s upcoming second season. The panel, which is traditionally held on location at Comic Con in San Diego, was presented online due to ongoing complications caused by COVID-19 pandemic.
The hour long virtual panel features host Aisha Tyler (Archer, Criminal Minds) speaking to showrunner Eric Kripke (Jacked, Timeless), along with series stars Karl Urban (Dredd), Jack Quaid (Plus One), Antony Starr (American Gothic), Erin Moriarty (The Miracle), Jessie T. Usher (Shaft), Laz Alonso (Avatar), Chance Crawford (Gossip Girl), Tomer Capon (When Heroes Fly), Karen Fukuhara (Suicide Squad), and Aya Cash (The Wolf of Wall Street) who were all seen in attendance from the safety of their homes.
Each of the actors was given a brief segment to discuss the development of their character from season one into season two. While there were no spoilers revealed, the panel did help to incite discussion around the motivations of each of the characters, humanizing, or at the very least rationalizing, their actions within the fictional world of The Boys. Kripke describes this effort as central to his show, which he describes as being primarily “character forward” in its conception. When talking about his insight into the sophomore season of the show, Kripke said that he tried to make this season more “emotional” and with “higher stakes” by forcing the characters into situations that were influenced by real world confrontations, such as dealing with issues of systemic racism and white nationalism. While he remained somewhat cryptic about details on the second season, Kripke’s interview does show promise of more of the same emotional and action packed dynamism the first season was able to capitalize on.
Before the panel ended, there was a guest appearance from executive producers Seth Rogen (Long Shot, Knocked Up) and Evan Goldberg (Sausage Party, The Interview) who both came on to announce that The Boys will be renewed for a third season. Additionally, host Tyler announced that she would also host a new after show titled Prime Rewind: Inside The Boys. Following each episode, Prime Rewind will follow the production of the show while also covering the themes and big ideas that were central to each episode.
The Boys is based on The New York Times best-selling comic by Garth Ennis (Preacher, Hellblazer) and Darick Robertson (Space Beaver, Wolverine). Comic Con provided this description for the series: “The Boys is a fun and irreverent take on what happens when superheroes – who are as popular as celebrities – abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. The even more intense, more insane season two finds The Boys on the run from the law, hunted by the Supes, and desperately trying to regroup and fight back against Vought.”
Season two of The Boys will release three episodes on September 4, after which it will release one a week until it concludes its season. If you haven’t checked out the teaser trailer for season two, check it out on our site here.
